Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve obsessed about doing hair. I’ll pretty much do the hair of anyone who will let me. My amazing parents – whose only goal was to keep me off the streets during those scary teen years – patiently put up with the make-shift salon I created in the backyard during summer and the kitchen during winter. My dear friends, lovingly let me recreate the looks of ‘80’s era David Bowie and The Go-Go’s which, when paired with the latest fashions from Le Chateau, made them totally look like those girls from the pages of Seventeen Magazine… (And I mean totally…)
Alas, however, after graduating high school an illustrious career in the exciting music industry hooked me and the world of hair took a backseat.
Flash forward 15 years – I’ve successfully conquered the Vancouver and Toronto music scenes (meaning I’ve made some great friends…) and won over New York City. In the process I had the honour of working with some of the best, traveling the globe with the likes of Dave Matthews Band and k.d.lang on someone else’s dime. I certainly couldn’t complain…
But after all those years in the entertainment biz, I wanted a change and the renowned Aveda School in NYC’s Soho district was beckoning. What girl doesn’t dream of doing makeovers for a living? This single move propelled me into a completely different world of amazing people – I trained with Nick Arrojo, Robert Cromeans, the team at Bumble & Bumble, blah, blah, blah – and in the process have gotten my hands on hair and faces belonging to actors Suleka Mathew (Men in Trees, DaVinci’s Inquest, Touch of Pink), Nick Lea (X-Files, CSI, Vertical Limit), Gabrielle Miller (Corner Gas), Glynnis Davies (The L Word) and Gabrielle Rose (Robson Arms) as well as members of indie-rock bands, Broken Social Scene and The Dears. Heck, I even cut the hair of would-be presidential first-daughter Alexandra Kerry.
But you know, after 6 intense years in NYC, I found myself longing to be back in Vancouver. Home is where the heart is, after all – along with friends and loved ones… I moved back in September of ’07 and I couldn’t be happier to be here!
